Alexandra Wong was born in San Francisco, California, on April 19, 1982. Adolphus Wong, her father, was an American-born physician who worked at Kaiser Permanente for 30 years and had Chinese ancestors.

Wong graduated from San Francisco University High School in 2000, where she served as class president of the student body.

She earned a BA in Asian American Studies from UCLA in 2004.
